Background[ edit ] Following John Lennon ‘s announcement in a band meeting on 20 September that he wanted a “divorce” from the Beatles , Paul McCartney withdrew to his farm in Campbeltown , Scotland. I suppose the hurt of it all, and the disappointment, and the sorrow of losing this great band, these great friends I was going crazy. She had a seven-year-old and a baby to look after, with a husband who was depressed and drunk. She later told friends it was one of the most difficult times in her life, while Paul reflected that he might have become a rock ‘n’ roll casualty at this point in his career. Very simple [set-up], as basic as you can get Even now that album has an interesting sound. Very analogue, very direct.

The Heartland Lonn said: I finally agree to the trade but now he wants me to drive an hour and a half each way for the trade. WTF is wrong with people? Why are you looking at guitars 3 hours away if you’re not willing to go get them? CalicoSkies , If you are starting at ground zero, that makes sense. However, in this situation, I’m with Lonn. This was the last great renaissance of French singing before the Second World War changed the whole nature of cultural life in France. This minute survey not only covers the singers, but the key repertoire as well. The slight booklet note, while well intentioned, isn’t tremendously helpful and assumes that the listener already knows a lot about French opera going into this package; perhaps that’s just as well, as the potential audience for this mammoth set outside of France is going to be limited indeed.
Disc 6, consisting of 26 tracks surveying the French operatic landscape in the wake of Bizet ‘s Carmen and including works by 14 composers ranging from Offenbach to Ravel , is a lot to take in on its own. The sound, as one might expect for a package of such great comprehension, is variable in the extreme, though none of the tracks betray more than a faint amount of hiss at their worst and sound reasonably lifelike at best, though some transient audio artifacts resulting from digital audio restoration is audible here and there.

The Perfect Electric Guitar? Is the Gibson Les Paul Studio gig-ready off the shelf? For some reason, my Gibson Les Paul Studio shipped with bridge saddles like knife-edges, ripping through my wound strings almost immediately. This is actually an advantage, as Gibson were still binding over the ends of frets at the time, meaning strings could be easily caught on them during bends.
My Gibson Les Paul Studio was originally ebony with silver hardware, an ominously-cool modern-looking instrument, so I was happy to live without a burst. Lastly, it featured speedknobs, which was another upgrade over my old Les Paul Standard. Going back to the Epiphone Les Paul Standard comparison, it came very close, but the finishing of the fretwork and fret-board in general was scruffier. Your going to need a Gibson Les Paul on the neck pickup.
Nothing else will get you that wide, flutey, syrupy thick, warm overdriven tone. The neck is too blurry for overdriven rhythm, while the bridge barges its way through anything. I want to hang onto the notes and mold them into something unpredictable, not just have them die out on me. In fact, the T strikes just the right balance of crisp cutting highs, penetrating woody mids, and controlled but still deep bass.
The Gibson R and T pickups were standard across the range at the time, and even featured in the high-end customs and supremes of the day.

Epiphone Les Paul Epiphone Les Paul Dating back to and once a major rival of Gibson, the Epiphone company and brand were purchased by Gibson’s parent company in Originally the Epiphone models were made in the same factory as the Gibson guitars, by the same craftspeople using the same materials and often with the same features as Gibson models, but manufacturing of most of the Epiphone instruments was switched to Asia sometime around Today, Gibson primarily uses the Epiphone brand as their high value, lower priced overseas-built alternative to their top tier Gibson USA models.
All Epiphone models sold in the United States are subjected to a 15 point inspection process, and are “set up” in the USA by trained Gibson employees at their Nashville facility. Around , Les Paul, a legendary musician and musical electronics and solidbody guitar pioneer, created one of his early solid bodied guitars after-hours in the Epiphone factory out of a 4X4″ piece of wood. On to this he later attached side “wings” from a Epiphone hollowbody guitar in order to give it a more conventional look.
This guitar, known as “The Log”, was later shown to Gibson executives, who initially passed on the idea of building them, but they changed their mind within a couple of years and the Les Paul Model guitar as we know it today was first released in These early “gold top” models were later joined by the black Les Paul Customs, and then the sunburst “Standards” of the late s. Several Epiphone Les Paul models are very close to the classic Gibson models upon which they are based, while other models are designed with different features to keep the entry price low for students and budget-minded players.
For example, some Epiphone Les Paul models use bolt-on neck construction and “slab” bodies which are generally less expensive to manufacture, while others stick with tradition and have arched maple tops and glued-in necks like their high-end Gibson counterparts. At the mid and upper range of the Epiphone Les Paul range, most guitars retain practically all of the other essential Les Paul features — two humbucking or P90 single coil pickups, two volume and two tone controls, a three-way selector switch, body and neck binding, In addition to such long-running models as the Les Paul Standard, Studio and Custom, Epiphone has also released various artist signature and limited edition Les Paul models over the years.
These usually offer artist-endorsed combinations of features and cosmetics, or custom improvements and appearance upgrades that are not normally found on the standard models.

In addition to the major venues at the Giardini and the Arsenale, and the many national pavilions scattered around the city, there are the ever increasing ancillary mega-exhibitions staged in spectacular palazzi by billionaire tycoons and art-loving luxury super-brands. In introductory interviews she emphasized her desire to spotlight artists over the more usual emphasis on the thematic and the curatorial, all while acknowledging the overwhelming pressure and urgency of issues on the planet.
Nonetheless my wife Jill and I saw flashes of brilliance everywhere. To this viewer however, the Italian Pavilion in the Giardini, now simply called the Central Pavilion, which has traditionally been the kick-off curatorial stage for the Biennale, was a significant disappointment. The architectural interior of this pavilion is in dire need of a makeover or even a rebuild.
It takes an extraordinary installation to overcome its now tired structure. This was not it. As one enters under a lively exterior draped painting by Sam Gilliam honoring Yves Klein, among the first works encountered are installations by Dawn Kasper and the provocateur Franz West that confront assumptions about our hyper-active lives and our propensity to see work-production as the only way to assess or validate our selves.

Well known users “With a balanced low-impedance output, you could use long cables without all the problems inherent in unbalanced high-impedance lines. Gibson was keen on having the low-impedance transformer close to the amp, so we made a special cable with a transformer on the other end, which you had to have in order to use it. But if you forgot your cable, you were out of luck—so we added the switch to go from low to high impedance.
One position on the Les Paul Bass was meant to sound just like the Precision, and all the other settings were extra choices for the player. The Triumph sounded so good it was scary; it was the finest bass I knew how to come up with, but the kids of that time were not ready for so many options. If I could have done something different, I would have made a bass with one great sound. Other changes from it’s predecessor were cosmetic; all controls were situated on the front mounted control panel, rather than onto the wood itself.
The standard finish was natural mahogany, with white becoming available from This bass also featured the split diamond inlays on the headstock, and block position markers replacing dots on the neck.

Period-Correct Pickguard The creme-colored pickguard has been a Les Paul staple dating back to the models of the late s and the early s. Many players, however, removed the pickguard from their Les Pauls to show off the beauty of the flame maple tops, prompting Gibson to stop installing the pickguard altogether. During the s and s, Gibson began reinstalling the pickguard in the factory, and the Les Pauls from this era once again arrived in stores bearing the classic, creme-colored pickguard.
