Email Copy Link Copied Our alarms go off. We get our families ready, get ourselves ready, make lunches and send our kids off to school. We sigh after they get on the bus as we realize that we now have a few minutes where we can sit and do absolutely anything we want without having to answer any questions. We assume that the people we are leaving our children with for the next 8 hours are trustworthy. We assume that they will treat our kids with dignity and respect because if they don’t have it in them to treat our children with care then why would they have become teachers?
For those of us who were sheltered during school we missed the tragedy of a real truth that exists in our schools today. Many teachers are becoming very close with their students. Sometimes, they are becoming too close. Teachers are getting caught doing sneaky things with students.

I received some push-back from non-educators. There were also concerns that teachers who would interact with students in these environments would be putting themselves at risk. There is undoubtedly a lot of fear about teacher-student interactions, both in the US and elsewhere. All too often, there is an assumption that when teachers interact with students out of the classroom, they have bad intentions.
Stupid things like giving them lunch money or being there to listen to their woes or helping a first generation kid learn about college.

The Hook The Hook strategy is a short opening into a lesson, that prepares the students for the upcoming material that they will be learning. The Hook is best used at, but not limited to, the beginning of the first lesson of a topic. It should be an exercise that smoothly leads into the lesson, but the hook should not teach the lesson. The Hook strategy can be done in multiple ways and should be done with energy, producing a promising, encouraging outcome for your students.
The Hook is not limited to the listed examples, there are endless possibilities that can be used in each of these categories. The cognitive learning theory says, that the brains memory process is like a computer, when retaining new information. The first stop in our actual brain is the sensory memory. If not paying attention the information will not proceed to perception, the process of moving the information into our short-term working memory.
Once in short-term memory, you decide what you want to remember, this will last only 20 seconds. The information then moves to the storage part of the brain, known as long-term memory. Long-term memory is where all the information we know is filed, much like a permanent filing cabinet.

Few people have experienced terror like Kaitlin Roig-DeBellis. Just as they wrapped up their talk, she heard gunshots from the hallway. She crammed all 15 of her students into the three-by-four-foot bathroom inside her classroom to hide from the attacker. She writes about that struggle for both herself and her students in Choosing Hope: When the children returned to school, they were fearful and jumpy at every loud noise. Though Roig-DeBellis and mental health professionals at the school were doing their best to help the children adjust to a new building, she felt more changes needed to be made, like metal bars on the windows beside the front door, and a rope-ladder in case the kids needed to escape out the window.

A video documents that the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School were a staged hoax. The information presented in that video was a mixture of misinformation, innuendo, and subjective interpretation, such as the following: All of this is typical in the crush for information from the news media, public, and relatives of victims that follows in the wake of disasters involving large numbers of deaths.
An unidentified man whom some children reported seeing pinned down on the ground in handcuffs outside a nearby firehouse was also briefly detained and then released when police determined he was merely an innocent passerby. Chris Rodia himself was not at Sandy Hook Elementary when the shootings took place; he was driving a different vehicle in another town at the time. As Connecticut State Police spokesperson Lt. The answer is yes. Adam Lanza brought three weapons inside Sandy Hook Elementary school on December 14 and left a fourth in his car, police said.

Try to make an effort to call on students who have typically been off task or who have been achieving at a low level, allowing them to respond and participate in class, and watch what happens. Over time, you will notice that these students will remain on task more often and improve academically! This change does not occur immediately, but it definitely does occur and is extremely gratifying to see. Latency is the amount of time that elapses between the moment you give a student a response opportunity and the moment you terminate the response opportunity.

But did you know that your state is also a valuable resource for college funding? States work with colleges and universities, alongside the U. Department of Education , to provide a blend of financial assistance for students at all levels. Information you provide on your FAFSA helps tabulate the cost of your education, and estimates your ability to pay for college.
Other states require additional documentation, and deadlines are not always the same. States issue grants directly to students, but institutional grants are also given to colleges and universities. Merit-based grants and scholarships are issued to recognize exemplary performance. Academic grants go to students whose classroom achievements set them apart from their contemporaries. Consider the unique populations you belong to, and look beyond general state aid, to the grant programs that reward people just like you.
Grants for ethnic minorities —African American, Hispanic, Asian, and Native American students—target specific groups needing college cash. Low-income and disadvantaged students qualify for general need-based aid in most states that offer it, but specific funding is also set aside for students whose access to education is severely limited by social and financial conditions.
Nursing and teaching grants are issued by states, in return for service obligations that require participants to work in under-served areas. In many states, Veterans and National Guard members enjoy generous grants for college.

A Beaumont High School teacher suspected of having sex with one of her male students pleaded not guilty Wednesday to felony charges. Prosecutors charged her last week with two counts of unlawful intercourse with a minor and one count of oral copulation of a child under 18 years old.
Her alleged relationship with the unidentified student came to light in June, after a family member texted the alleged victim to confirm whether swirling rumors regarding Ciotta and the boy were true, according to an arrest warrant declaration. The boy told police that he had sex with Ciotta on numerous occasions, but could not remember the exact number of times because he was usually intoxicated during their meetings, according to the declaration.
He initially covered for her but later decided to stop lying for Ciotta after she had sex with his year-old friend, the declaration alleges. Ciottam was placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of her case, which marked the second teacher sex scandal to rock Beaumont High this year. In October, English teacher Christina Austin, 37, was arrested for having an alleged relationship with a year-old female student.
Ciotta remains free on bond and is scheduled to return to court on Jan. Sign up here for your free newsletter. Email Address Teacher suspected of drunk sex with student, hook-up with his friend was last modified: Get our Free Daily Newsletters Here!
